Father Jim Carter, S. J. served as 14th President of Loyola University New Orleans for 21 years, which is the longest tenure of any president in the university's history. He is recognized in many fields including theology, science and civic leadership. He also served as Loyola's provost and academic vice president. After serving as the university's president, he retired in 1994. He moved into the newly created position of chancellor. Upon his departure from Loyola in 2001, he was named pastor of Immaculate Conception Church in New Orleans, Louisiana.
